As part of its ongoing commitment to nurturing local talent and promoting a vibrant reading and writing culture in Eswatini, Imisebe Publishing hosted a successful Novel Writing Workshop on 12 May 2026. The workshop formed part of the company’s broader mentorship initiative aimed at equipping emerging authors with practical writing skills while also supporting experienced writers in refining their craft.
The workshop followed closely after the launch of the siSwati Novel Writing Competition, which was officially launched by UNESCO Secretary General Lwandle Simelane during the World Book Day celebrations held at the Imisebe Publishing offices on 6 May 2026.
Facilitated by Dr. Portia Mkhonta, the workshop brought together both aspiring and published authors for an engaging and insightful learning experience. Dr. Mkhonta guided participants through the key elements of novel writing, including plot development, character creation, storytelling techniques, and the importance of authentic and culturally relevant narratives. She also encouraged aspiring writers to take the competition seriously and use it as an opportunity to develop their voices and contribute to siSwati literature.
One of the highlights of the workshop was a panel discussion featuring both seasoned and emerging authors, including Thembikile Msibi, Saleyendvwa Magagula, Dr. Sarah Mkhonza, Wandile Mathonsi, Sandile Mathonsi, and Musa Nxumalo. The panellists shared their personal writing journeys, reflecting on the challenges they encountered, the lessons they learned, and the perseverance required to succeed as writers.
The interactive session allowed participants to engage directly with the panellists through questions and discussions, creating a supportive environment for learning, networking, and inspiration. Authors were able to gain practical insights not only into the writing process, but also into the realities of publishing and sustaining a writing career.
Delivering a vote of thanks on behalf of the participants, one of the emerging authors, Gcebile Vilakati, expressed appreciation to Imisebe Publishing for creating a platform that empowers and uplifts local writers. She noted that workshops, mentorship programmes, and literary competitions play a vital role in discovering and nurturing talent while building confidence among aspiring writers. She further stated that such initiatives provide valuable opportunities for authors to learn from experienced writers, share ideas, and strengthen the growth of the local publishing industry while encouraging the production of high-quality siSwati literature that reflects local experiences and identities.
Speaking at the conclusion of the workshop, Marcia Mamba of Imisebe Publishing expressed gratitude to all facilitators, panellists, and participants for contributing to the success of the event. She wished all authors well as they prepared their submissions for the siSwati Novel Writing Competition, which closes on 31 July 2026.
