Commemoration of International Literacy Day 2024
International Literacy Day, observed annually on September 8, was established by UNESCO during its 14th General Conference on October 26, 1966. This global event aims to underscore the critical importance of literacy for individuals, communities, and societies at large. Celebrated across the world, International Literacy Day serves as a platform to highlight progress, address challenges, and promote literacy initiatives.
The theme for International Literacy Day 2024, “Promoting Multilingual Education: Literacy for Mutual Understanding and Peace,” resonates deeply with the ongoing Decade of Indigenous Languages. This year’s theme emphasizes the need to champion diverse languages and foster their role in development discussions and cultural preservation.
In alignment with this theme, Imisebe is dedicated to promoting a culture of reading in emaSwati. As part of the commemoration, Imisebe proudly partnered with Sebenta National Institute to host a significant event in Manzini. The celebration commenced with an awareness walk from Business Park to Somhlolo Park, designed to advocate for literacy and its pivotal role in national development.
The event was honored by the presence of the Minister for Education and Training, Honourable Owen Nxumalo. In his speech, Minister Nxumalo reiterated his commitment to transforming education and promoting literacy. He stressed the importance of utilizing siSwati and representing our cultural and linguistic heritage in Artificial Intelligence applications. The Minister also praised the publication of “Umphandza Sichazamagama seSiSwati,” a monolingual dictionary aimed at promoting and preserving the siSwati language.
In addition to Minister Nxumalo, the celebration featured speeches from other notable figures, including the General Secretary of the Eswatini National Commission for UNESCO and the CEO of Sebenta National Institute. The event saw valuable contributions from various partners such as MTN, UNESCO, EBIS, Bulembu, and Eswatini National Library Services.
International Literacy Day 2024 was a testament to the power of literacy and multilingual education in fostering mutual understanding and peace. Through collaborative efforts and continued advocacy, the event underscored the essential role of education in shaping a more inclusive and literate society.
