International Mother Language Day: Imisebe Reflects on Efforts to Preserve and Promote SiSwati Language

As the world celebrates International Mother Language Day 2025 under the theme “Silver Jubilee, Language Matters,” Imisebe Publishing proudly reflects on its 16-year journey in preserving and promoting the SiSwati language. Passionate about linguistic and cultural heritage, Imisebe has actively supported numerous initiatives dedicated to the growth and sustainability of SiSwati.

A Legacy of SiSwati Publications

Imisebe’s commitment to SiSwati is evident in the rich educational materials it has published over the years. Notable works include:

  • Sabalala Misebe – A SiSwati poetry anthology that has nurtured young poets in writing and performance.
  • Umtsentse and Litsafa – Books that continue to preserve SiSwati oral traditions and storytelling.
  • SiSwati Readers, Big Books and Charts – Educational tools that develop literacy, support language learning, and preserve SiSwati oral and written traditions.

Beyond publications, Imisebe is dedicated to discovering and mentoring SiSwati authors. Workshops led by seasoned writers such as Thembekile Msibi, UNESWA Academician Portia Khoza and Dr. Sarah Mkhonza ensure that SiSwati literature thrives for future generations.

Cultural Engagement and Sponsorships

Recognizing the deep connection between language and culture, Imisebe has actively supported cultural events, including:

  • Miss Cultural Heritage, in partnership with the Eswatini Arts and Culture Council.

  • Arts and Culture Schools Competition, fostering artistic expression in young students.

  • School Culture Days, promoting appreciation for Eswatini traditions among learners.

A Groundbreaking Achievement: The First SiSwati Monolingual Dictionary

One of Imisebe’s proudest moments came in 2020 with the publication of Umphandza, Eswatini’s first SiSwati monolingual dictionary. This milestone was celebrated with an official launch attended by then Deputy Prime Minister Themba Masuku, who praised Imisebe’s efforts in preserving the country’s linguistic heritage.

Bringing SiSwati into the Digital Age

Understanding the need for digital adaptation, Imisebe has expanded its reach by making Umphandza and other SiSwati books available as eBooks. In collaboration with Eswatini SiSwati Subject Teachers’ Association and Technosol, Imisebe introduced Sibitelo Nemisebe, a technology-driven SiSwati competition for public schools.

Upcoming Event: Sibitelo Nemisebe for Private Schools

To celebrate International Mother Language Day, Imisebe will host Sibitelo Nemisebe for private schools on February 25, 2025. This event reaffirms the publisher’s dedication to ensuring that SiSwati remains a living, evolving, and cherished language for generations to come.
