Big Bend crowned champions for Sibitelo Nemisebe 2024
Bigbend High School emerged as the winner, triumphing over Bulunga High School in a thrilling contest for the top prize. The competition also saw Ka-Boyce High School and Franson Christian High School sharing the third position.
Awards and Prizes
Bigbend High School walked away with an impressive array of prizes, including Oukitel C36 phones, smart watches, gold medals, a grand trophy, Rhino hampers, and a tablet for the school. In second place, Bulunga High School received smart watches, silver medals, a medium trophy, Rhino hampers, and Imisebe promotional materials. The third-placed schools, Ka-Boyce High School and Franson Christian High School, were awarded bronze medals, a small trophy, Rhino hampers for each student, and Imisebe promotional materials.
In addition, a special prize named the Oukitel Top Speller was awarded to Sihlonganyane Nomcebo, recognizing exceptional spelling skills.

The competition was made possible through the support of valued partners, including Technosol, Oukitel Eswatini, and Rhino. Their contributions played a crucial role in the event’s success.
Remarks and Highlights
During the event, Imisebe Managing Director, Hlob’sile Stromvig, emphasized the significance of the spelling competition in preserving and promoting the siSwati language through innovative approaches. She highlighted that the words used in the competition were sourced from Umphandza, a siSwati monolingual dictionary published by Imisebe in 2021. Stromvig also noted that research supports the use of games as an effective learning tool, demonstrating that learning siSwati can be engaging and enjoyable, similar to learning other languages like English.
Stromvig’s remarks also underscored Imisebe’s alignment with UNESCO’s Decade of Indigenous Languages (2022-2032), aiming to revitalize and promote indigenous languages globally. The spelling competition not only sharpens learners’ speaking, listening, and writing skills but also reinforces siSwati as a vital component of education.
Guest Speakers and Contributions
The event was graced by various stakeholders, including officials from the Ministry of Education, Ministry of ICT departments, Arts & Culture representatives, SiSwati teachers, students, and journalists.
The guest speaker, Director for EBIS Sabelo Dlamini, spoke about the importance of spelling in enhancing communication skills and the integral role of native languages in defining cultural identity. He emphasized the need for national engagement in language development and preservation to maintain cultural heritage.
Senior Inspector Celiwe Mohammed expressed gratitude towards Imisebe for their initiatives to promote the siSwati subject, including visibility and support for culture days, teachers’ workshops, and the production of the country’s first monolingual dictionary. She also thanked partners Technosol, Oukitel, and Mega Brands for their support, and acknowledged the contributions of EBIS in involving youth in broadcasting.
Ms. Cultural Heritage encouraged the youth to engage in more initiatives that promote language and culture, highlighting the importance of such efforts in sustaining and celebrating cultural heritage.
