As part of its commitment to promoting literacy, reading and creative writing in Eswatini, Imisebe Publishing commemorated Literacy Day by recognising and rewarding outstanding SiSwati novel writers through a novel-writing competition launched in May 2026.
The competition attracted both seasoned and budding writers from different parts of the country, providing them with an opportunity to showcase their creativity and contribute to the growth of SiSwati literature. A total of E21,000 in prize money was awarded to the top-performing writers.
Skhanyiso Bophela emerged as the overall winner with her novel, Impela Ngiyawuke Ngive, receiving E10,000. Sixteen-year-old Silindelewena Dlongolo from Duze High School in Siphofaneni secured second place with her novel, Ingabe Iselephi, and received E5,000. Third place was shared by Nombulelo Mndzebele, for her novel Lutsandvo Lolungenamuncele, and Gcina Mhlanga, for Emadlelo Laluhlata. Each writer received E3,000.
Speaking after receiving her award, Dlongolo expressed gratitude to Imisebe Publishing for creating a platform that allows aspiring writers to share their work and gain recognition. She noted that the opportunity had inspired her to continue writing and developing her skills.
“This opportunity will inspire me to keep writing and growing,” she said.
Delivering a message of encouragement to the writers, Dr Hugh Magagula urged participants not to lose hope if they did not win. He reminded them that writing is a journey that requires dedication, patience and perseverance.
“Keep writing, believe in your work and continue pursuing your passion,” said Dr Magagula.
He further encouraged writers to remain committed to developing their craft, emphasising that every piece of writing contributes to personal growth and the advancement of SiSwati literature.
In her closing remarks, UNESCO Secretary-General Lwandle Simelane highlighted that literacy extends far beyond the ability to read and write. Speaking under the theme “Literacy for People, the Planet and Prosperity,” she said literacy enables people to understand information, think critically, communicate effectively and participate meaningfully in society.
She noted that in today’s world, digital literacy, financial literacy, media literacy and numeracy are essential life skills that help people navigate everyday challenges and opportunities.
